We caught up with Kate, captain of the Pink Ladies, to chat about her experiences with the team and what people can expect if they join them for the new season, which kicks off with an open night next Friday.
How long have you been a member of the Pink Ladies?
"2 years, this will be my 3rd season."
What motivated you to join?
"I actually had considered trying to join a hockey team before but didn't know how to go about it. I hadn't done any sport in about 15 years. I really liked the idea of it being an LGBT team. Seemed like the perfect fit!"
In what ways do you think you have benefitted from being a member?
"I have benefitted in so many ways, from finding a fantastic group of new friends, to finding a sport that I love and am so passionate about, to finding out that I am in fact VERY competitive. It has helped with my mental health and has spurred me on the be a fitter, faster goalkeeper."
If you had to single out one moment or event as the highlight of your time with the Pink Ladies, what would it be?
"There are so many highlights but for me it was being asked to be club captain this year. I'm very honoured and was so surprised."
What's the training schedule like with the Pink Ladies?
"Training is one evening a week, generally Thursdays, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. It runs from May until July / August time at Railway Union Hockey club in Sandymount."
The Pink Ladies are having their launch night on Friday April 19th. What advice would you have for any women out there who might be thinking of coming along but are unsure?
"You have nothing to lose by coming along. If you are afraid because you won't know anyone send us a message on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. We would be happy to keep an eye out for you! Or feel free to bring along a friend for support, they don't have to be LGBT. It's all about the craic and getting to know new members 😀
The Pink Ladies launch night takes place on Friday April 19th at Agaisnt The Grain (11 Wexford Street, Dublin). It kicks off at 7.30pm and all are welcome. No previous hockey experience necessary.
