Volunteer Committee Member

Sporting Pride is a volunteer-run LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+) community organisation that focuses on developing inclusivity in sport, and sports clubs within the whole Irish community. Committee members in Sporting Pride are responsible for ensuring the day to day operations of Sporting Pride run smoothly. In organisations without paid staff, like Sporting Pride, committee member are required to take on a broader role to ensure that activities operate consistently throughout the year. Therefore, a higher level of time commitment may be needed.

  • Term of Office: 1 year (voluntary basis)

  • Time Commitment:

    • 12 meetings per year + approx. 1 hour per week.

    • Meetings are normally held Tuesdays evenings online with up to 4 in person meetings held on Saturdays in Dublin. Committee members are asked to not miss more than 2 meetings in a row.

We are aiming to diversify our committee and would particularly welcome applications from disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates, as well as women, transgender and non-binary community members.

Key Responsibilities

Vision and Leadership:

  • To provide strategic direction and take initiative in relation to annual planning and running events / campaigns.

  • To get involved in the activities of the organisation and the wider issues that affect its work.

  • To ensure the work of the organisation is monitored and evaluated.

Accountability & Legal Responsibilities:

  • To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document (e.g. constitution or memorandum and articles of association).

  • To ensure the organisation keeps to the law, including company law.

  • To ensure the organisation makes efficient use of resources, in particular that all monies are applied to its objects, agreed plans and budgets.

  • To be accountable to membership, funders and other stakeholders.

Qualities/Skills:

  • Experience of committee work and procedures;

  • Knowledge of the challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community in sports participation;

  • An interest in the areas of planning pride events, sports activities for minority groups (LGBTQ+ community including older people, people with disabilities, asylum seekers), engaging more LGBTQ+ students in sports activities;

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences;

  • Well organised and an eye for detail;

  • Understanding of and commitment to the organisation’s mission & values;

  • Good time management.

  • All volunteers are required to sign a code of conduct prior to volunteering with Sporting Pride.

Training:

New committee members will be provided with induction training that will cover our mission, vision and values, as well as an overview of past events and what is required of the new volunteer.
